This is the story of 150 years of the greatest names of French sculpture through the enterprise and culture of eight generations of the Susse family. The comprehensive Appendices contain the Susse sales catalogues issued between 1839 and 1939; facsimiles of the five Dalou contracts of 1899-1918 and the schedule of Dalou bronzes edited by Hébrard; a facsimile of the contract with Carpeaux’s estate of 1914; a list of artists edited by Susse; and reproductions and seals used between 1837 and 1990. There are over 170 illustrations, 36 in colour. Had they been bankers the name of Susse would have been a household word; as it is their contribution will, though less well known, certainly be more durable.
